Prayer & Fasting

WHAT IS FASTING?

There are two main principles related to biblical prayer and fasting;

a) Going without food

b) A focused season of prayer

Fasting is the laying aside of food for a period of time when the believer is seeking to know God in a deeper experience. Prayer connects us to God and fasting disconnects us from the world.

WHY FAST?

JESUS TAUGHT US TO

Jesus fasted, knowing there were supernatural things that could not be released any other way. Jesus made it clear that fasting, like prayer and giving, is a normal part of Christian life.

TO ADVANCE GOD’S KINGDOM

In the Bible, God’s people spent time in fasting and prayer before a major advance of God’s Kingdom. E.g. when Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit to be tempted by the devil, He entered into a season of prayer and fasting.

HELP IN TIMES OF WEAKNESS

God draws towards those who humbly and honestly admit how desperately they need Him. Our weakness makes room for His power. “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness’… For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

IT RELEASES BREAKTHROUGH POWER

In Matthew 17, we read of the demon-possessed boy. The disciples asked Jesus, “Why could WE not cast him out?” Jesus replies in verse 21, “this kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”

TO INCREASE GOD’S MANIFEST POWER IN OUR LIVES

Fasting is a re-directing of our physical appetite towards God and His Word. “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26

TO EXPRESS OUR DEPENDENCY UPON GOD

Choosing to go without food for the purpose of seeking God is a very practical way to humble ourselves before God. “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up” James 4:10

WHAT TO PRAY FOR

Let’s believe God for him to move in our personal lives and in our church in 2016. Pray for God’s will to be outworked in your life this year, ask God to speak to you for direction and for him to use you to fulfill the purpose he has for you in 2016. Pray for Influencers Church, for Ps Ashley & Jane, Ps Josh & Sjhana and the team. Pray that in 2016 God releases resource, abilities and finance that will position Influencers Church for the future. Pray that this year there will be an abundance of testimonies, of miracles and answers to prayer. Most of all, pray that the lost will find Jesus, that people who had previously given up on God will come back to him and come back to church.

BIBLICAL FASTING OPTIONS

a) Full food fast. Drink only liquids, especially water, but including clear soup, fruit and vegetable juices.

b) Partial Fast. Give up one meal a day for 14 days.

c) Daniel Fast. The Daniel Fast is described in Daniel 10:3 and is free from meat, bread, sweets and any drink, except for water.

MAKING THE MOST OUT OF PRAYER & FASTING

Think and pray… About what to do; what to fast, the purpose of the fast.

Talk with your doctor… About any health concerns that may affect your fasting.

Find a prayer/fasting partner… who can support and encourage you.

When you fast, your body detoxifies… Limit your activity, exercise moderately, rest and drink lots and lots of water!

If you break your fast… don’t feel guilty and don’t give up, just keep going.

When it’s time to end the fast… start with fruit juices, fruit, vegetables, salad, eggs and go slowly with your intake of food.

If you have any questions… please talk to a pastor or your department leader.
